CHAPTER 6

After hours of question after question, speculation after speculation, Taj was left with no choice but to call her mother. Nora was definitely pissed, but twenty minutes after she arrived, she was walking out of the station with her daughter. She was hurt at the fact that Taj thought she couldn’t call her sooner. When they arrived back at Taj’s school, her mother told her not to talk to anyone about the situation and promised to find her the best lawyer just in case she ended up needing one. Taj kissed her mother and went in the building. She desperately wanted to be alone.

She saw the red light flashing on their answering machine and was hoping she had a message from Kenny, but to no avail. All three of the messages were for Lana. Taj grabbed her notebook and began to write, but after she paged Kenny one more time. It was hard for her to concentrate because she couldn’t help but to think about Luke and Sharae being dead.

About two hours later, Kenny had finally called back. Instead of sounding anxious to find out what was going on, he seemed upset.

“So that’s the bullshit that was going on that made you page me 911 a million times?”

Taj was confused. She was practically being accused of murder and he couldn’t see the severity and urgency in that.

“Uh, I don’t know what kind of shit you deem to be important, but that was pretty important to me.”

“Look, I am a very busy man. Usually if it’s not about some work or money, no one should be blowing me up like that. I thought you would get the hint after the first five pages and you didn’t receive a call back, but I guess not. Anyway I’ll stop by tomorrow at about two o’clock to pick you up so we can get that business started for you, so get some sleep.”

Kenny said what he had to say and ended the call. Taj was left staring at the receiver with no one on the other end. She was livid. She called her father thinking he would shed some light on the dark situation. Benny gave her a major let down when he told her he had to go because he was getting ready to go out. “Fuck everybody!” she thought.

A couple of weeks had gone by. Taj was no longer a suspect in Sharae’s murder because it happened when she was in class and it was proven. She was so glad she followed her fist mind and went to class that morning. In a perfect world she thought since the detectives knew she didn’t kill Sharae, they would think she didn’t kill Luke either. Not so easy. Detective Morris thought maybe Taj was working with someone else in Luke’s murder. On the plus side of things, as the days went by, her name was released less and less out of Detective Morris’ mouth. He didn’t have any concrete evidence, so he didn’t have a case.
